Here in our small town in Northwest Georgia (populatuon 3100), our Mayor has to answer to some allegations that may result in him being removed from office.

The first announcement was on January 8th where the city council scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss an issue that had to do with employee safety and workplace welfare at city hall.  That sent the town guessing what happened.  Was it the mayor? city manager?  Who?  We all figured out it was the mayor.  The announcement stated there must be a meeting to finalize if the issue warrants removal and schedule a public hearing.  Now, the rumor mill started.  At the meeting, it was unanimous that a hearing will be held.

It was apparent to me, based on the announcement, something was said or done in the offices of city hall that was bad enough to remove the mayor from office.  However, the social media storm that ensued contained speculation about the reason for the hearing.  The overwhelming “reason” is that our Mayor was against a real estate project (we had an old mill that was torn down and the land was gifted to the city).  I don’t know how they got to that conclusion, which has nothing to do with employee safety.  Unless, maybe the employees were running amuck on the old mill land and eating the contaminated soil….nah, doubt that.  I have a pretty good idea how that rumor started, but I decided to keep that to myself.  I have been to the meetings about the mill and the mayor did not speak up against the project.  Now, the mayor’s supporters are saying that the city manager and city council just want to get rid of him, so, they conjured to these allegations.  Both the city and the mayor have attorneys involved and it has become a very big thing.  With that being said, and the fact the mayor really doesn’t have that much power (the city council does) then, I don’t think it is a witch hunt.

The mayor supporters are saying that the city council changed the charter just before the mayor took office, stripping him of his powers.  I looked into it, and yes, there was an amendment to the charter just before the mayor took office, but it had nothing to do with his powers.  It was to define the role of the city manager as the budget manager, personnel manager and required reporting and approvals from the city council and the mayor for any money spent.  The powers of the mayor were established by the charter in 2014.  Long before the last election cycle.  So, this stance is also incorrect

Where do all these falsehoods come from?  I have an idea, but I am keeping that to myself also.

Fast forward to now.  The hearing is scheduled for Monday, February 9th 2026 at 6pm at our small 66-person capacity civic center.  They tried to have this meeting a week ago, but had to postpone it due to public outcry about the small venue and the mayor supporters want to be heard.  They are still having the meeting at the civic center, but have made accommodations for audio outside and a live streaming for folks who couldn’t get into the building.  Oh, the mayor supporters hate that.  They want to be heard, they want to speak, they think they have the right to have a say about an elected mayor being removed.  Really? Is that how they think government works?

We made our voices heard already when we voted for the city council. We elected them to represent us, We the People. The city charter states that the city council has the power to remove an elected official from office. There is a procedure that includes a public hearing, which is happening Monday evening. This works like other government agencies such as the Federal Government. When Trump was impeached, did voters have a say in it? Did we go to the polls and vote on it? Any voters go to Congress and speak during the public impeachment hearings? No. They didn’t. We are invited to the public hearing, but only as a spectator, similar to the Federal Government and probably most municipalities in the country.

At this moment, the allegations are being held very close to the vest by the city and the mayor, probably on the direction of counsel. The mayor supporters are still upset thinking this is all false and a witch hunt. The allegations and response by the mayor will all be told Monday and these speculations will hopefully end. I hope that the issues are such that there are no questions that he should be removed. Based on the announcement, it looks like there are multiple issues at hand. If the issues are “ho hum”, the city council may have to answer some difficult questions to answer.
